Leather Bracelet Size Guide: How to Measure Your Wrist

Finding the right bracelet size starts with one simple number:

your actual wrist measurement.

Not the length of your favorite bracelet,
Not the size you usually wear,
Not “I'm a medium.”

Your wrist is the only measurement I need.

And because I make each leather bracelet according to its particular construction, I calculate the finished bracelet size from your wrist measurement for that specific design.

So let's get this right before your bracelet ever reaches the workbench.

How to Measure Your Wrist

You only need a flexible measuring tape, or a piece of string and a ruler.

1. Decide where you want the bracelet to sit

This matters more than you might think.

Do you like your bracelets:

snug and close to your hand?
just above the wrist bone?
slightly loose so they can move?
higher on the wrist because you wear a watch?
in a stack with other bracelets?

Measure exactly where you want this particular bracelet to sit.

2. Measure your bare wrist

Wrap the measuring tape around your wrist, keeping it flush against your skin without pulling it tight.

If you're using string, mark where the string meets, then lay it flat against a ruler and measure the length.

Do not add extra room.

(Even you feel you have to.)

I need your actual, skin-tight wrist circumference. I will take care of the additional clearance needed for the bracelet itself.

3. Give me the exact measurement

For example:

"My wrist measures 17 cm."

That's the number I want.

Please don't convert it into a bracelet length yourself.

And please don't tell me: “I usually wear a medium.”

There is no universal “medium” for handmade leather bracelets.

Why Your Wrist Measurement Is Not Your Bracelet Measurement

This is where handmade leather bracelets become a little more complicated.

A bracelet is not a piece of string.

The thickness of the leather, the width of the bracelet, its shape, its closure and even where the hardware sits all affect how much space is available around your wrist.

A thin leather band and a thick leather cuff can have the same flat length and fit completely differently.

That's why your wrist circumference and the finished bracelet length are not interchangeable measurements. I explain the strange little physics of this in much more detail here:

Why I Don't Want You to Measure an Existing Bracelet

This is one of the most common things customers understandably try to do:

“I have a bracelet that fits perfectly. It's 18 cm long, so I'll order an 18 cm bracelet.”

But-but-but-that doesn't mean anything.

Your existing bracelet may be:

thinner or thicker than the new one,
narrower or wider,
made from a different type of leather,
more flexible,
constructed differently,
using a different clasp,
designed to sit in a different position on your wrist.

An 18 cm thin leather band and an 18 cm thick cuff do not create the same amount of usable space around your wrist.

Measure your wrist, not your old bracelet.

What I Do With Your Measurement

When you give me your exact wrist circumference, I don't simply copy that number onto a piece of leather.

I calculate the finished bracelet size according to the particular design.

I take into account:

Leather thickness — thicker leather changes the inner circumference when curved.

Bracelet width — a narrow band behaves differently from a wide cuff.

Leather type and flexibility — soft leather and firm leather don't behave exactly the same way.

Closure and hardware — snaps, buttons, buckles and other closures affect the usable length.

Bracelet construction — a fixed cuff, wrap bracelet and layered bracelet each require a different approach.

Where the closure sits — I consider how the hardware rests against the underside of your wrist.

Your preferred fit — snug, comfortable or looser depending on the design and how you intend to wear it.

And every other information you might share (including gender, job restrictions, lifestyle and so on.)

In other words:

You give me the wrist. I do the mathematics.

How Much Extra Room Should I Add?

Excuse me - None.

If you are measuring your bare wrist for one of my bracelets, give me the measurement exactly as you get it.

Don't add 1 cm because you want a comfortable fit.

Don't add 2 cm because you want the bracelet loose.

Don't subtract anything because you like a snug bracelet.

Those decisions depend on the actual bracelet you're ordering.

What If I'm Between Sizes?

Measured your bare wrist
Measured at the exact position where you want the bracelet to sit
Kept the tape or string flush against your skin
Recorded the measurement without adding extra room
Used your wrist measurement rather than the length of an existing bracelet

There is no universal bracelet “M.”

There is your wrist, your preferred fit, and the particular piece you're wearing.
